WARNING: All of these laws can change frequently. There are bills in the legislature changing DWI law every single year. These answers to common questions are not legal advice in any case. Consult an attorney before making decisions and to learn what may have changed, and what applies in your case.

Q: Which lawyer is right for me?

A: Ask around. Like Doctors, some lawyers possess more experience, skill and talent than others. The risks in DWI cases have gone sky high, and a good lawyer knows going in that you want the best possible result in a bad arena, in a bad era, usually with bad facts.

DWIs are among the toughest cases we see. Where else does a machine point a finger at you and say: "Guilty"?

Some lawyers seem to win a wildly disproportionate number of revocation and DWI cases, and these are often the names you see teaching other lawyers at seminars. If you know police or prosecutors and have a lawyer in mind, ask: Is he any good? Or ask: Is she right for me?

Some lawyers have been voted by their own peers as a leader in the DWI area - labeled Super Lawyer or Leading Attorney or Top Lawyer. These awards are real. These lawyers were voted there by other lawyers, from other firms. The lawyers all know who they are.

DWI practice is as much an art as it is a science. With so many calamities staring you in the face, you want things to go better by choosing your lawyer - not worse. Ask around.

I advise you consider lawyers who offer a free initial call, and one flat rate fee for the case. This develops trust. If your lawyer advises rejecting an offer and coming back to court another day, you know this is in your best interests. He or she is already paid, and is coming back to court for you. You are not going to be sent another bill for fees.

Take the position that you are hiring an artist. You want the artist's best work, regardless how many sittings it takes.

Get someone in your corner who treats your case as though it is his own brother or sister being defended.

Then let him or her work. These are awful cases nowadays, with a very real political agenda, and you are being swept up in it. But these cases can be controlled, and many can be won. Defend yourself!
